आपने ग़ालिब का नाम जरूर सुना होगा। वे उर्दू के सबसे बड़े शायर कहे जाते हैं। इस कारण विश्व साहित्य में भी उनका नाम है। वे दिल्ली के रहने वाले थे। आखिरी मुग़ल बादशाह बहादुरशाह ज़फर को खुद भी शायरी का शौक था। ग़ालिब उनके दोस्त थे। सन् 1857 में भारत की पहली जनक्रान्ति हुई। हजारों निर्दोष व्यक्तियों को आज़ादी की इस लड़ाई में अंग्रेज़ों ने मार डाला। ग़ालिब उन दिनों दिल्ली में थे। अंग्रेज़ों के अत्याचारों को खुद उन्होंने देखा। तब उन्होंने एक डायरी लिखी थी- दस्तम्बू, दस्तम्बू में ग़ालिब ने 1857 में दिल्ली का हाल लिखा है। इसमें साधारण आदमी की मुसीबत और भूख तथा प्यास से तड़पते लोगों का भी जिक्र है। चित्र - गूगल से साभार ग़ालिब ने दस्तम्बू में लिखा है... अँग्रेज़ों ने दिल्ली में आते ही सीधे-सादे लोगों को मारना शुरू कर दिया। उन्होंने गरीबों के घर भी जला दिए। गोरों के डर से दिल्ली वालों में भगदड़ मच गई। अपनी-अपनी जान बचाकर वे भाग निकले। जिस गली में मैं रहता हूँ उसमें सिर्फ दस-बारह घर थे। गली में घुसने का सिर्फ एक ही रास्ता था।...

They called her ‘Fats’ , although her name was Fatima. And she wasn’t even fat. At least, not in that nice, pudgy way that makes little girls look adorable to adults. She wasn’t adorable or sweet, or anything like the sugar and spice and everything nice that little girls are supposedly made of. In fact, she was BAD. Bad in big, bold, capital letters. She was a fighter and had been so ever since she came to the Home as a four year old orphan. She’d been in another home before that. She’d been left there, at the doorstep – abandoned by the mother no one would ever know. That orphanage looked after infants. Now, at four, she was considered old enough to move to a new environment. She’d never been adopted as some of the other babies had. She hated the new Home from her first day there. She perceived a grayness that filled her with dismay.
